Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
