The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
