Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
