In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
