Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of materials that included no new data.
