Defense Department Report Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Event

The online conversation in question included particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
